Introduction
Islamic University of Technology (IUT), a subsidiary organ of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), is mandated to develop human resources of the OIC member states in the fields of engineering, technology, and technical education. The objectives of IUT, therefore, include imparting technical knowledge at various levels, upgrading skills, conducting research, and sharing specialized technical expertise among the member states of the OIC.
With a view to achieving the aforementioned objectives, the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department has been organizing a workshop almost every year since its inauguration. In this sequel, the CSE Department is organizing a workshop on “Cyber Security for Information Age: Practices and Challenges” to be held during 22-24 July, 2022 at IUT campus.
Course Objective
Given the massive scale of digitalization globally, it's been more critical than ever to equip ourselves for the unforeseen threats the cyber world poses. Every day, many cyber-attacks are mounted against organizations, governments, and individuals. The complexity and sophistication of attackers continue to rise with the cyber defense community trying their best to be a step ahead in this continuous arms race. It's now not a question of If the attack will happen; on the contrary, it has become When it will happen.
In this information age, no organization can consider itself completely safe and look the other way when the risk of cyber threats is always looming there. The cost and impact of successful attacks have shown us how drastic the consequences can be. Sensitive information has been leaked, organizations have gone bankrupt, and their brand value and user trust have gone completely, not to mention the monetary losses. In addition, attacks on national infrastructures have resulted in critical system shutdowns and power blackouts. All these events point to an alarming future that requires every possible stakeholder to prepare to raise their cyber security posture before it's too late
Every aspect of the digital assets that an organization employs to perform its business function is fundamentally hackable. The web and mobile applications, underlying databases, servers, workstations, and even human operators are now a target for attackers. The first thing organizations must do to protect their system is to know the available assets and their vulnerabilities and measure the risk to prioritize security mechanisms. Then they need to know the state-of-the-art defensive measures to protect their assets. And most important of all, the human workforce under the organization needs to be cyber aware and vigilant because a system is as safe as its weakest link, and humans tend to be the weakest link in the system, as demonstrated by most major successful attacks. With all being said, we at the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department of Islamic University of Technology (IUT) are arranging this workshop to enhance the cyber security knowledge of possible stakeholders, shed light on the state-of-the-art of cyber security practices, cyber-attack methodologies, how to defend against them and how to better prepare for the coming future.
