The IUT Computer Society (IUTCS) successfully hosted an engaging Introductory Session of the Competitive Programming Workshop for Batch 2023 on September 4th, 2024. This standalone event, spanning around two hours, brought together over 150 eager first-year students in Rooms 301 and 302 of the Second Academic Building to introduce them to the world of competitive programming and inspire them to dive deeper into this rewarding field.

Dr. Moniruzzaman Milton, Assistant Professor and Coordinator, CSE Program, CSE Department, set the tone by emphasizing how competitive programming can provide a distinct advantage in academic studies. Encouraging students to engage in competitions, he explained how it develops crucial problem-solving skills that are transferable across many disciplines. Sabbir Ahmed, Assistant Professor, CSE further built upon this, explaining that mastering programming challenges not only prepares students for future jobs but also sharpens critical thinking and the ability to tackle real-life challenges. In a candid discussion, Md. Bakhtiar Hasan, Assistant Professor, CSE Department offered guidance on how to remain motivated despite academic pressures. He emphasized the importance of balancing regular studies with competitive programming, advising students to follow a path that may allow them to succeed in both.

Adding a personal touch to the session, Safayet Hossain Masum, an IUT alumnus and a software engineer at Amazon, shared his incredible journey from IUT to landing a job at one of the world’s top tech companies. He highlighted how his relentless pursuit of competitive programming, along with the support of his teammates, played a key role in his growth, both as a person and a professional. His inspiring story of teamwork and dedication left a lasting impression on the attendees.

The session also featured the awarding of prizes to the top performers in the IUT Junior Programming Contest (IUTJPC), which took place earlier. Saom Bin Khaled, a first-year student, stunned the audience with his performance, solving 7 out of 9 problems and clinching the top spot. His triumph over more experienced students highlighted the depth of talent in the batch.
Saom was joined by fellow first-year students Nayeem Hossain Ahad, Jannatul Ferdus Rakhi, Fariya Ahmed, and Md. Mahiul Kabir, all of whom placed in the top five and received prize money worth 12,500 BDT. In total, seven of the top ten contestants were first-year students, marking an exceptional display of potential.

The session concluded with remarks from the current and recently graduated competitive programmers of IUT, who laid out a roadmap for continued development in competitive programming. They announced weekly training sessions to be held every Wednesday afternoon, where students will have the chance to further hone their skills through practice and guidance from experienced seniors.
In closing, the Introductory Session set a strong foundation for Batch 23 students, fueling their enthusiasm and encouraging them to pursue excellence in the world of competitive programming. With regular training sessions and consistent mentorship, IUT’s competitive programming community continues to nurture and develop future problem-solvers and innovators.
